Flowers get the same pots as our vegetables, and often the same soil, so everything here is tested in small spaces with not much root room. The guides cover the whole year: sowing zinnias in spring, planting tulip bulbs in fall, and collecting snapdragon seeds at the end of the season so you never buy that packet again.

The tulip guide uses the layering trick, where bulbs go in at two or three depths in one pot. It gives you a much fuller pot in spring than a single layer does, and it is the one guide here I would call a little bit of a cheat.

If you want something quick and cheerful, go with dwarf zinnias. They go from seed to bloom in about eight weeks and keep going until frost as long as you keep cutting them. If it is already fall, start with the tulips, because the bulbs have to be in the pot before the cold arrives.
